Australia Day Honours

Our staff and alumni have been recognised for the significant contributions they've made in their fields and to their communities with the 2013 round of Australia Day Honours.


Queen's Birthday Honours

University of Sydney academics and researchers have been recognised in this year's Queen's Birthday Honours for their contribution to politics, medical research and education, with one academic receiving Australia's highest honour the Companion of the Order of Australia.


Australian Research Council Fellowships

Joss Bland-Hawthorn was awarded a fellowship to the Australian Research Council for "Pioneering the science of astrophotonics and making significant contributions to experimental physics and astrophysics."

Joss Bland-Hawthorn was awarded the prestigious 2012 Jackson-Gwilt Medal by the UK's Royal Astronomical Society for his innovative work in developing technology for space and ground based astronomy, which has led to new directions in astronomy and astrophysics.

Paul Berkemeier will become the next president of the Australian Institute of Architects, Australia's leading architecture industry body.


Vietnamese Ministry of Health

Professor Peter McMinn

The Vietnamese Ministry of Health awarded Peter McMinn the People's Health Medal. The medal represents Vietnam’s highest health award and was given in recognition of his work in Vietnam.


Student accolades

NSW Board of Studies

Arts/law student Rebecca Wong, who has been visually impaired since birth, was awarded the Brother John Taylor Memorial Prize by the NSW Board of Studies for outstanding HSC results despite significant hardship.


Endeavour Australia Awards

Two University of Sydney PhD students will continue their research overseas after being awarded Prime Minister's Australia Asia Awards in the 2012 round of the Endeavour Australia Awards.

Patrick Neumann and Elisabeth Kramer both received Australia-Asia Outgoing Postgraduate awards from Prime Minister Julia Gillard at the Briefing Program and Presentation Dinner held at the end of 2011.
