Society of the month: Sydney University Dramatic Society (SUDS)
Sydney University Costume Society
Originally founded to throw costume parties in the bars around campus, the Sydney University Costume Society (CosSoc) is a unique society as we promote the incorporation of costumes within campus life, both in performance arts and as a recreational activity.
The society is a great way to meet like-minded people who are costume hobbyists, cosplayers and fancy dress enthusiasts. We hold many different events, like fancy dress parties, costume themed photo-shoots, costume making workshops, attending outside events such as conventions, plays and films, and have an array of costumes for hire, as well as our meet and greet drinks throughout the year.
The society frequently comes in contact with professionals in the performing arts and costume related industries, like make-up artist Colin Wilson and his work on the Mad Hatter at The Mad Hatter’s High Tea at Verge Festival 2012, and photographer David Tang who came and photographed our members during a photo-shoot excursion in the Glebe Tram Yards in 2010.
Online our CosSoc Facebook group allows our members and non-members to discuss and answer questions with anything costume related (which you can imagine is a lot!). Our CosSoc YouTube channel even features playlists on ‘How to’ subjects such as sewing and our CosSoc Newsletter keeps our members up to date with the latest costume parties, events and conventions both on and off campus.
It's worth being a member of CosSoc even just for the fantastic costume parties!
