Broadway Scheme 2013

Domestic UAC applicants who have experienced long-term educational disadvantage may apply to the Broadway Scheme, the University of Sydney's Educational Access Scheme (EAS) co-ordinated by the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC).

The scheme is mainly intended for current-year Australian Year 12 students who expect to receive an ATAR (or equivalent).

To be eligible for consideration you will be required to demonstrate that your educational performance during Year 11 and/or Year 12 (or equivalent) has been seriously affected by circumstances beyond your control.

Applying to the Broadway Scheme

• NSW Year 12 students - Your school will receive EAS booklets with the UAC Guides by mid-August 2012. The booklets contain the EAS application forms. Check with your school's Careers Advisor.
• Interstate Year 12 students - Your school receives a sample EAS booklet for information. You can either download the EAS booklet from UAC or contact UAC and request an EAS booklet be sent to you by mail (no charge).
• Other applicants - You can either download the EAS booklet from UAC or contact UAC and request an EAS booklet be sent to you by mail (no charge). Alternatively you can collect an EAS booklet from Student Centres of the participating UAC universities.
• On-time applications close at UAC on 28 September 2012. Late applications can be submitted to UAC up to 4 January 2013.

Automatic Broadway eligibility for certain high schools

The University grants automatic Broadway eligibility to students who complete their schooling at a high school classified as:

• NSW Government Priority Funding Program (PSFP),
• NSW Government Country Area Program (CAP), or
• Australian Government National Partnership for Low Socio-economic Status School Communities Program

In addition to this automatic Broadway eligibility, students who are attending a school in the above categories, and who do not wish to claim additional educational disadvantages, are not required to complete an EAS application. See the EAS booklet , pages 8 and 23.

How the Broadway Scheme works

The University allocates over 600 new student places for Broadway Scheme applicants. These places are available in a band of ATAR scores running down to five ranks below the published ATAR cut-off. The maximum effective ATAR bonus under the scheme is five.

Not all UAC courses are open under the scheme (see below) and in some cases, the number of Broadway places for a particular course is exhausted well before the maximum differential (five ATAR ranks) is reached.

In all the other Broadway-approved courses, however, approved Broadway applicants can expect that the full five ATAR rank differential will apply.

Broadway approved courses

All University of Sydney courses (51xxxx) available to UAC applicants for 2013 will have an allocation of Broadway places, except the following:

• 511216 B Arts (Advanced)(Honours)
• 511796 B Computer Science & Technology (Advanced)
• 511797 B Information Technology
• 512041 B Science (Advanced)*
• 512042 B Science (Advanced Mathematics)*
• 512085 B Psychology*
• 512099 B Science/ M Nutrition & Dietetics*
• and ALL Combined Medicine courses

* Although these courses are not Broadway-approved, if you are within five ATAR points of the cut-off, the Faculty of Science will consider you for Flexible Entry.

Broadway eligibility letters

As stated on page 3 of the 2013 EAS booklet, UAC will notify you about your EAS eligibility, including your eligibility for the University of Sydney's Broadway scheme. Provided you apply for EAS by 30 November, you will receive your UAC EAS eligibility letter on or after Friday 21 December 2012. Later EAS applicants will be notified after 4 January 2013.

Late Round and Final Round Broadway offers

Almost all of the University's UAC offers under the Broadway Scheme are made in the Main Round of offers. A very small number may be made in the Late Round (and the Final Round) if the Broadway quota is not filled following Main Round acceptances. You cannot rely on Broadway places being available for any University of Sydney course in the Late and/or Final Rounds of offers.

Mid-Year UAC Offers

No Broadway places are reserved for Mid-Year UAC admissions.

Broadway approval lifespan

Broadway approval is valid only for the current admissions session. Once you enter university, the benefit you possibly gained with Broadway-approval is exhausted. If you do not start university straightaway, and wish to be considered under the scheme in next year's intake, you will need to re-apply for EAS with UAC. However, if you elect to defer your place (having used your Broadway advantage to gain entry) you will not need to reapply for EAS. This applies only to the course you choose to defer.

Alternatives to Broadway

Broadway applicants should also consider the University's Flexible Entry Scheme.
