Compass program for social inclusion

When it was founded in 1850, the University of Sydney broke with tradition and decided to admit students based on their academic merit rather than religion or social class.

People from low socio-economic backgrounds continue to be significantly underrepresented in Australian higher education. Nevertheless, students from disadvantaged backgrounds that do enroll at university have similar patterns of retention and success as those from other backgrounds.

Through the Compass program, the University of Sydney encourages students to stay on at school and understand all the various pathways from school to university. Compass provides a variety of exciting learning activities to school students, as well as information and advice for their families, professional development teachers, and assistance with curriculum development.
