I have never lived in share accommodation before, what should I expect?

What sort of information do I need to supply for off-campus accommodation applications?

To improve your chances of securing accommodation after inspection, it is a good idea to take these documents along so you can fill out applications on the spot.

  • copies of your photo identification (passport, drivers licence, birth certificate)
  • bank statements which demonstrate you are able to pay rent
  • references from previous landlords or rental receipts/bills with your previous rental address appearing on them.

What is a rental "bond"? Do I need to pay it?

The bond is money you pay at the start of a tenancy agreement as security in case you do not follow the agreement. The most bond you can be required to pay is an amount equal to 4 weeks rent (that is, the rent you agreed to pay at the start of the tenancy). You cannot be required to pay a bond before you sign a tenancy agreement. Visit the Tenants NSW website page for more information about bonds.
