Gap year students
Some students choose to take a one year gap between high school and university to travel, work or explore other interests. Taking a gap year doesn't mean you are ineligible for a scholarship, but you will have to plan ahead to make sure you don't miss out.
Thinking of a gap year?
If you are thinking about taking a gap year make sure you don’t miss out on applying for a University of Sydney Scholarship. You must apply for these scholarships while you are still at school. If you are offered a University of Sydney Scholarship you may defer it for one year, but no applications will be accepted from students currently on a gap year.
Currently in a gap year
If you have already taken a gap year and missed out on the scholarships for school leavers, there are still some scholarships available. We recommend that you:
- Check your faculty website to see if there are any faculty specific scholarships for gap-year students.
- See if you are eligible for a University of Sydney Access Scholarship. This scholarship is for students who have achieved excellent results at high school and who have overcome a demonstrated disadvantage, whether it be financial hardship or a documented disability.
Also have a look at the other Equity scholarships available. - Apply for, or discuss changing to, a Centrelink student payment (Austudy, Abstudy or Youth Allowance), as you may be able to receive the new Commonwealth income support for students.
Do not hesitate to should you require further information.
