Professor John Carter AM

Professor Carter was elected to chair the Academic Board in July 2004. Having previously held academic appointments at the University of Cambridge and the University of Queensland, he joined the University of Sydney in 1982, where he was appointed to a personal chair in 1990 and to the Challis Professorship in Civil Engineering in 1999. He was a former Head of the Department of Civil Engineering and former Associate Dean for Research in the Faculty of Engineering. From 2002 to 2004 he was Chair of the Australian Research Council's Expert Advisory Committee for Engineering and Environmental Sciences. In 2003 he was elected as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering.

Professor Carter maintains an active research program in geotechnics and provides higher level consultancy to industry and the engineering profession. In 2006 he took up the position of Pro Vice-Chancelor (Engineering and Built Environmnet) at the University of Newcastle. In the Australia Day Honours 2006, Professor Carter was made a Member of the Order of Australia for his services to civil engineering.

As Chair of the Academic Board, Professor Carter oversaw Phase Two of the Academic Board Faculty Reviews and commenced development of the next stage of these Reviews. He also oversaw the first drafting of the Students at Risk Policy in response to a major review of student appeals against academic decisions.
