Prior to becoming Chair of the Academic Board in 1999, Professor Cram was Head of the School of Physics at the University of Sydney. Professor Cram has worked for the CSIRO's Division of Applied Science and has been a member of the Australian Gemini Board since 1998. He was a member of the Anglo-Australian Telescope Board from 1991 until 1997 and was Chair of this Board from 1995 to 1997. Professor Cram was also the Inaugural Chair of the Steering Committee for the Australia Telescope National Facility. He was appointed Executive Director for Physics, Chemistry and Geoscience at the ARC in February 2001 and is currently Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) at the Australian National University. He is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Physics and the Royal Astronomical Society, as well as a member of the American Astronomical Society, the International Astronomical Union and the Astronomical Society of Australia.
As Chair of the Academic Board, Professor Cram oversaw the review of a large number of policy statements and their collection into major policy documents. These policies included Assessment and Examination of Coursework, Management and Evaluation of Coursework Teaching and Creation, Variation and Deletion of Award Courses and Units of Study. Towards the end of his term he commenced a major review of the Board and the (then) Academic Forum.
