The development of the Abercrombie Precinct aligns with the University of Sydney's vision to create a dynamic place of engagement for students, researchers, staff and the wider community.
The site is bordered by Darlington Lane to the north, Codrington Street to the east, Abercrombie Street to the south and Darlington Public School to the west.
The new precinct will include:
- the new Business School building
- a state-of-the-art learning hub
- a student accommodation building.
The redevelopment received project approval in November 2012 from the NSW Department of Planning and Infrastructure.
The Business School currently teaches in more than 20 buildings of varying standards scattered across the Camperdown and Darlington campuses.
By consolidating the faculty into the Abercrombie Precinct we will increase the Business School's ability to attract the best and brightest students, staff and researchers from around the world in a highly competitive global market for business education.
The University’s key objectives for this project include:
- developing a world-class business school
- providing a high-quality experience for staff and students
- facilitating the use and further development of collaborative learning techniques
- providing a sustainable environment for energy efficiency, water efficiency and environmental quality.
The new building will replace outdated learning and teaching facilities. The project represents the single largest increase in University learning facilities since the 1960s, including:
- one 550-seat and three 300-seat lecture theatres
- eight 100-seat case study rooms
- 40 seminar rooms of varying size
- a learning hub
- 1500 square metres of informal learning space.
In total, the building will provide more than 11,000 square metres of new high-quality learning and teaching space.
The key components of the Abercrombie Precinct redevelopment includes delivery of the following:
- subdivision of the site to consolidate existing lots (including the closure of Rose Street and Boundary Lane) and create two development lots
- demolition of all buildings and structures within the site, with the exception of the existing Economics and Business Building (H69)
- ancillary works, including servicing and minor works to Darlington Public School.
Works in progress
- bulk and detailed earthworks across the site
- a Business School building over five levels, providing a total gross floor area of approximately 34,000 square metres
- a student accommodation building facing Abercrombie Street.
Our design concept promotes and respects the local historic character, including a re-interpretation of the old joinery workshop, the re-use of stone kerbing and the referencing of historic materials.
Central to our design is the retention and celebration of the Sydney blue gum tree, increased size of the pocket park and a friendly Codrington Street interface.
Design features include:
- generous boundary setbacks
- minimal overshadowing to neighbouring properties
- creating safe pedestrian pathways through the site
- retention of major trees on the school's boundary.
A component of the vision for the Business School is to create a vibrant living environment that is innovative, integrative, warm and magnetic. It is our intention to create a precinct that accurately represents this vision.
