Pride Network

Creating a stronger and more inclusive environment
The Pride Network supports the inclusion of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex and Asexual (LGBTQIA+) members of our community.

What we do

We strive for all Pride Network members to experience safety,  joy and connection. Whether you are a student or member of staff who identifies as LGBTQIA+ and/or stand in solidarity with the LGBTQIA+ community as an ally, welcome. We are so glad you are here.

Together, our network will:

  • Facilitate intersectional and accessible environments for all LGBTQIA+ Students and Staff to thrive
  • Increase collective understanding of LGBTQIA+ lived experience to drive cultural change leading to greater LGBTQIA+ equity and inclusion
  • Challenge all forms of bigotry and prejudice against LGBTQIA+ peoples
  • Amplify the voices of LGBTQIA+ Students and Staff by providing platforms to enact change and a pathway to raise concerns directly with University Executive
  • Commemorate annual LGBTQIA+ dates of significance

Want to speak to someone?

We have a large network of Allies on campus (see list below) that you can contact for a confidential conversation. Allies have completed training and are available to support LGBTQIA+ staff and students and answer any questions they may have. Allies:

  • are staff and students
  • are LGBTQIA+ friendly and trained to support LGBTQIA+ issues
  • provide a safe and confidential environment for people to ask questions about LGBTQIA+ diversity
  • attend training, formally sign a pledge of support and treat all conversations and approaches as strictly confidential
  • show leadership through their public support of people of all diverse genders, sexualities and sex characteristics
  • promote respect and inclusion of LGBTQIA+ staff and students and role model non-discriminatory practices and language
  • proactively combat, wherever possible, homophobia, transphobia and biphobia and heterosexism on campus

Please note, contacts are not experts in LGBTQIA+ issues and may or may not be from the LGBTQIA+ community.

Mardi Gras

As part of our commitment to diversity and inclusion at the University, we have been a part of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras since 2015. Learn more about our involvement, which we are proud to continue this year.

Note on terminology

At the University of Sydney, ‘LGBTQIA+’ is used as an inclusive umbrella term that recognises the diversity and experiences of sexualities, sex characteristics and genders. We acknowledge that this terminology is a source of ongoing community debate and may not reflect the preferred identification of individuals.
