How to apply for a job at the University of Sydney

Steps

1

Decide if we're the right fit for you

Before applying to the University, reflect on whether your values are aligned with ours. If we are a good match, search our current roles to see whether any positions are available that suit your skills, experience and qualifications. If you’d like assistance or more information about a particular role, you can also contact the relevant HR representative.

2

Prepare your application

It is important to prepare your CV and a cover letter that demonstrates your suitability for the role you are applying for. We recommend you refer to both the advert and position description when compiling these. There are also some questions you will be asked to respond to as part of the application process. Be sure to proofread your application including any documents. Once you have submitted your application online, you’ll be sent an email acknowledging that it has been received.

Attend the job interview

After the closing date, the selection committee will review and discuss all applications and agree on a shortlist. You will then be notified of the outcome of your application. If you are shortlisted for the position, the selection committee will contact you for one or more interviews (either face to face or, in some cases, by phone or video call). Academics and senior professional roles may be asked to conduct a lecture/seminar as a part of the interview process. After the interviews, the selection committee will confirm your referees, carry out other checks as required, and make their final decision.

Recruitment support for people with disability

The University of Sydney welcomes people with disability to join our dynamic and diverse team.

We offer support and advice to job applicants with disability throughout all stages of the recruitment process from first enquiry to getting started as a new employee. We conduct our interviews in accessible venues, offer flexible interview arrangements and can provide specific adjustments to the interview format to accommodate your disability if required. For example, with adequate notice we can provide an Auslan interpreter at the interview for a job applicant who uses Auslan for communication.

Frequently asked questions

Your partner’s ability to work will be determined by the visa they hold, even if this is a secondary visa (ie a visa which is 'secondary' to your visa). Your partner can confirm their work rights by reviewing their visa grant letter, contacting the Department of Home Affairs or reviewing the government webpages associated with the visa subclass that has been granted.

Your partner may also be required to meet specific eligibility criteria for their profession and/or trade, and dependent upon their residency status, some roles may only be open to permanent residents or Australian citizens or employees of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent.

We will do our utmost to ensure your application remains confidential and your identity is known only to members of the selection panel. For some academic positions the recommended recruitment process may involve a presentation to faculty/school members. However, if confidentiality is an issue, your concerns would override this and any presentation would be to the selection panel only.

You can register to receive email job alerts. When a role is advertised that matches your search criteria you will automatically be notified.
