Background
Andrew undertook his honours thesis as part of his mechanical engineering degree at the ACMM in 2008 with Dr. Julie Cairney. The thesis was entitled, ‘Improving the Understanding of Strip Cast Steel Structures though 3D imaging” and involved developing FIB slice and view and optical metallography techniques to reconstruct acicular ferrite grains in cast strip steels.
Research project
Andrew is now working with Prof. Simon Ringer and Dr. Michael Moody on applying Atom Probe Tomography (APT) techniques to study atomic structure and solute atom dispersions in nanostructured materials. A major aim of the research is to refine the spatial resolution within APT reconstructions of doped Silicon and characterise the dopant atom distribution. Another focus is characterising the nanostructure of platinum group metal superalloys.
