Postgraduate Courses: Master, Diploma and Certificate

The Australian Centre for Microscopy & Microanalysis offers the following coursework postgraduate award courses:
- Graduate Certificate in Applied Science (Microscopy and Microanalysis)
- Graduate Diploma in Applied Science (Microscopy and Microanalysis)
- Master of Applied Science (Microscopy and Microanalysis)
- Master of Applied Science (Microscopy and Microanalysis) (Materials Science)
- Master of Applied Science (Microscopy and Microanalysis) (Biomolecular Science)
These courses provide students with a professional qualification in microscopy and microanalysis for industry, research, medical science and education purposes. The courses develop and enhance skills in specimen preparation, operation of microscopes and analytical equipment, the interpretation of microscopical images, and microanalysis.
Further, it is possible to complete a MSc or PhD by Research.
Additional information about these courses can be found on the University’s Faculty of Science website, and you can contact us at .
The Faculty of Science website also holds enrolment information and general information about graduate study at the University of Sydney.

What to expect from the courses
Microscopy and microanalysis techniques are vital to a wide range of disciplines in both arts and sciences but few undergraduate degree programs provide a solid grounding in the field. These courses will develop and enhance your skills in specimen preparation, operation of microscopes and analytical equipment, maintenance of electron microscopes, interpretation of microscopical images, and microanalysis. By the end of this course you should have an understanding of a wide range of microscopy and microanalysis techniques. You will have the background knowledge to choose the best method to solve any given characterisation problem. You will gain practical experience in the operation of a variety of microscopy methods and also in sample preparation.
Classes are a mixture of lectures and practicals. The practical work is all hands-on and students will have the opportunity to drive world-class instruments, at first under supervision, until they become competent independent operators. Most practical teaching is done in groups of two to three students. There are no formal examinations, but students are assessed according to attendance, participation, competence on the use of equipment, and submission of short problem solving exercises and written reports.
