A Year to Celebrate: Happy Birthday EMU 1958–2008

EMU History Images – Today

This year, 2008, is the golden jubilee of the EMU, and we are celebrating the Unit’s growth to its current role as an influential and integral part of the University of Sydney.

What started as a small support unit in the Bank Building, today incorporates the Australian Key Centre for Microscopy and Microanalysis, as well as the headquarters of the Australian Microscopy & Microanalysis Research Facility (AMMRF), and is home to more than 40 staff members and about 20 PhD students as well as nearly 30 major instruments.

The foresight of the University in establishing a core facility in the enabling area of microscopy and microanalysis has paid off. Today, the Electron Microscope Unit serves as an interdisciplinary hub for researchers across the University, including particularly science, medicine, dentistry and engineering.
