Biographical details

Ana Horta is a Richard Claude Mankin Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Environmental Sciences, working within the Soil Security and Hydrology and Geo-Information Laboratories. She is currently responsible for developing an approach that combines remote sensing data with physically-based models to predict and forecast soil moisture in space and time. This new methodology focuses on subsoil moisture and allows the incorporation of available field observations using different model building approaches. Her research also includes the development of geospatial and statistical approaches to deal with data processing and modelling in soil science and related areas.

Ana holds a PhD (2011) and a degree (1999) in Environmental Engineering obtained at Instituto Superior Técnico (Technical University of Lisbon, www.ist.utl.pt). Her PhD thesis was entitled "Geostatistical models for soil quality assessment" and was undertaken within the Centre for Natural Resources and Environment (http://cerena.ist.utl.pt/). From 2006 to 2012 she received two scholarships (PhD and Postdoctoral) supported by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) (http://www.fct.pt). Besides her research in geostatistics, Ana has provided environmental consultancy services to private and public companies concerning soil contamination assessments and environmental strategic assessments. From 2000 to 2005, Ana worked as environmental consultant.

Research interests

Ana’s PhD work contributed to the field of soil science through the development of new geostatistical methodologies to evaluate soil quality. Her research resulted in improved stochastic simulation and co-simulation algorithms able to reproduce the variability of key soil properties integrating additional information given by secondary attributes or physically-based models.

As a postdoctoral researcher she continues to pursue her work in soil science by exploring new spatial statistical approaches to be applied to spatial and temporal datasets. Her current project focuses on providing a space-time monitoring system for subsoil moisture that ultimately will provide near real-time predictions which can be used to guide management decisions and as inputs to environmental models. This project includes the integration of remote sensing products with physical water balance models and inverse modelling.

Ana’s other research interests are soil contamination, uncertainty assessment, data integration and spatial-temporal models.
