Biographical details

Brett Whelan undertook a small farm management course at TAFE before completing a BScAgr (Hons) at the University of Sydney (1992). In 1995, he was involved in the establishment of the Australian Centre for Precision Agriculture (ACPA), an internationally recognised research and teaching entity within the now Faculty of Agriculture and Environment. He subsequently attained a PhD in Precision Agriculture (PA) in 1998 from the University of Sydney under the supervision of Prof. Alex McBratney. Since then, Brett has continued pioneering research in the field of PA, with the help of numerous commercial farmers, commodity research and development organisations and research colleagues. He remains a co-convener of the annual Symposium on Precision Agriculture in Australasia, first held by the ACPA in 1997, and now one of the world’s longest running national forums for developments in PA. In 2012 the ACPA evolved into the Precision Agriculture Laboratory (PA Lab) through which Brett continues to provide research, information and instruction for the wider national and international agricultural communities. A comprehensive set of PA education and training modules for the Australian grains industry was released in October 2010 and is freely available at the PA Lab website. In 2013 Brett co-authored a book, published by CSIRO Publishing, exploring in detail the application of Precision Agriculture in Grain Production Systems.

Research interests

Brett is interested in improving the efficiency of crop management in terms of input and water use within fields and farms. To do this requires that we understand the natural variability in crop production potential, identify and remedy any areas that have manipulable production restrictions, and then target our yield goals and input management to produce the most financially profitable crop with the greatest positive impact on the environment. Precision Agriculture (PA) is a management philosophy that encompasses these aims, and is the field in which he works as a research scientist. Brett's research has been aimed at utilising geospatial information on within-field variation in crop, soil and landscape gathered from remote and proximal sensing systems to develop PA as a practical crop management system for the grains, cotton, viticulture and horticultural industries. This is being achieved on commercial farms using techniques and procedures for quantifying the spatially-manageable variability within fields, then defining management classes or ‘zones’ for variable-rate treatment to optimise input use. These days the use of in-season crop reflectance sensors is enabling the incorporation of seasonal conditions into the management decisions.

Teaching and supervision

Brett’s agricultural career has been predominantly research-focused however he has developed and taught PA to undergraduates as a full unit of study, or within agronomy units, since 1997. Since 2013, he has been contributing substantially to directing and strengthening the teaching of the agronomy units of study within the Faculty. He has supervised/co-supervised more than 20 successful PhD and senior research students.

Current projects

Brett currently has a project funded by Horticulture Australia Limited (HAL) on PA in potato production, is running the University of Sydney’s involvement in a DAFF funded program on soil carbon management in conjunction with NSW Farmers and is part of a GRDC funded program researching PA tools in canopy/stubble management with the Riverine Plains Inc. grower group .
