Biographical details

Associate Professor Harbans Bariana is leading germplasm screening and enhancement activities of the Australian Cereal Rust Control Program. He interacts with wheat breeders from all breeding companies on issues related to breeding for rust resistance, validation & implementation of molecular markers and advice on the use of new sources of resistance to all three rust diseases of wheat. His research experience covers genetics and cytogenetics of rust resistance, genetic and bichemical control of wheat quality, molecular mapping and marker development & validation in wheat. He is actively involved in postgraduate supervision. He received a PhD in Agriculture from the University of Sydney.

Research interests

He has a passion for enhancing rust resistance in wheat and understands that while the world's population is increasing, we need to produce more food with fewer resources. Wheat rust is a major problem here in Australia and in India and we try to produce rust resistant varieties of wheat.
