Biographical details

Dr. Karaoglu graduated from the University of Sydney with a BSc (Hons) and PhD in Infectious Diseases and Microbiology in 2005. After a six month postdoctoral research in Westmead Hospital, he took up a postdoctoral research appointment in the Faculty of Agriculture and Environment in the University of Sydney. His research and teaching cover a wide range of areas in molecular biology, specifically, microsatellite, or simple sequence repeat marker development in pathogenic cereal rust fungi. He has nine publications in marker development and has supervised many students in areas of genomics, development and application of microsatellite markers.

Research interests

Molecular marker development in fungal genomes. Simple sequence repeats: evolution, abundance and distribution in fungi. Bioinformatics for whole genome sequencing, annotation and functional genomics.

Teaching and supervision

A reason Dr. Karaoglu enjoys working for the University of Sydney is the opportunity to teach and train undergraduate and postgraduate students. Very early in his undergraduate years, he has developed a liking for teaching and “spreading of knowledge”, which he has maintained to this day. Dr. Karaoglu gained his teaching experience through working as laboratory demonstrator and tutor in the school of Molecular Biosciences prior to his current position. Since 2005, he has supervised and mentored 3 Master students, 10 PhD students and over 16 international visiting students and scholars in the field of marker development and their application. He takes great satisfaction in seeing these students carry out similar work globally in various bacterial and fungal biosystems.
