Biographical details

Dr. Karanjeet Singh Sandhu, Myrtle Rust Pathologist, is coordinating a research project “GeneticbasisofpathogenicityinUredorangelii” at the Plant Breeding Institute (PBI) and developing “National Myrtle Rust Screening Facility” to deliver germplasm screening and advisory services to the industry. He received his PhD titled “Genetic and Molecular Analyses of Barley for Seedling and Adult Plant Resistance against Rust Diseases” in 2011 from the University of Sydney and MSc titled “Bioactivity of Melia azedarach L. against diamondback moth Plutella xylostella (L.)” in 1994 from the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU). He started his career as Assistant Professor Plant Protection at PAU and upon migrating to Australia started working on the cereal rust diseases at PBI. He went to serve as a Plant Pathologist at the Leslie Research Centre in Queensland before returning back to the University of Sydney in 2012. He has mapped a new seedling gene Rph21 and characterised new sources of adult plant resistance against Puccinia hordei. Dr. Sandhu has developed molecular markers to study the genetic variation of P. psidii in Australia.

Research interests

Rust diseases causing fungal pathogens pose a serious threat to the cereal crops and myrtaceous plants in Australia and overseas. Dr. Sandhu is interested to develop Integrated Disease Management Practices, through the identification and use of resistant germplasm and targeted use of fungicides, for a sustainable and environment friendly crop production system.

GRANTS

Under the “National Myrtle Rust Transition to Management (T2M) Program” his current research is funded by the Federal Government of Australia through Plant Health Australia.
