Biographical details

Dr Adhikari began his career in plant breeding as an assistant wheat breeder in Nepal, after completing a Bachelor’s degree with Honours from the Harayana Agricultural University, India. He obtained his Masters from the University of Manitoba, Canada in plant breeding and a PhD from the University of Sydney in genetics of cereal rust. After his PhD, he has been committed to grain legume (lupins, field pea and faba bean) research as a breeder. Dr Adhikari worked as a plant breeder for more than 14 years in Western Australia firstly at the University of Western Australia and later at the State Department of Agriculture and Food. He has released three varieties of lupins and one variety of faba beans in Australia. Along with increased grain yield and quality, breeding for resistance to diseases and insect pests have been his main focus. He joined the University of Sydney in 2010 as a plant breeder.

Research interests

Dr Adhikari leads the faba bean breeding program for northern New South Wales and southern Queensland to provide alternative crops to wheat in rotation. He is interested in plant breeding that has a vital role in providing food security to ever increasing human population. Grain legumes have been his main focus to increase their productivity so that they can become profitable crops in the farming system. To pursue these interests he seeks genetic solutions to crop constraints. Therefore, he is involved in developing new breeding methodologies and the inheritance studies of biotic as well as abiotic stresses in crop plants.

Developing alternative grain legumes, such as field pea, grass pea and pigeon pea is also his area of interest to diversify the grain legumes for this region. Currently Dr Adhikari has a number of projects researching on biotic as well as abiotic stresses on crops, especially grain legumes.
