Biographical details

Nathan completed a PhD in digital soil mapping at The University of Sydney in 2009. His research investigated numerical classification and led to the development of a bottom-up numerical soil classification system. He worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow at West Virginia University in the United States from 2010 to 2012, developing the preliminary version of the United States' contribution to the GlobalSoilMap digital soil property map of the world. Nathan returned to Sydney in early 2012 to work in the Federal Government's Terrestrial Ecology Research Network (TERN) Soil and Landscape Grid of Australia Facility where he investigates the spatial disaggregation of legacy soil polygon maps and how to use the disaggregated maps in new techniques for digital soil property mapping. The software arising from this work, DSMART and PROPR, have received strong interest from scientists in soil mapping agencies in Australia and the US.

Research interests

Large libraries of soil polygon maps have been compiled around the world since about the turn of the 20th century. The maps typically contain polygons identifying defined assemblages of soil classes, and have been surveyed according to different standards and published at different scales. My research, in collaboration with other Sydney and CSIRO researchers, focusses on making the best of such legacy soil maps via spatial disaggregation. Spatial disaggregation uses modern numerical techniques to map the soil classes of legacy soil maps individually. The new soil maps can then be used to create digital maps of soil properties and associated uncertainty.

Another research interest lies in soil classification and how statistical techniques can be used to develop more quantitative soil classification systems.

I am also interested in soil data collection and storage. The recent explosion in the quality and availability of tablet PCs has opened new avenues for field data collection.
