Biographical details

Professor Robert Park’s career began after he completed a PhD in Plant Pathology at La Trobe University in 1984. His first appointment was with the Queensland Department of Primary Industries, where he worked on the impact of wheat stripe rust in the north eastern Australian wheat belt. He was appointed as a Research Fellow at the University of Sydney’s Plant Breeding Institute in 1988, and has worked there since on rust diseases of cereals. Professor Park was awarded an Alexander von Humboldt research award in Germany in 1995, and a Fulbright Senior Scholarship to the USA in 2010. In recognition of his work in China, he was awarded the Friendship Award of China in 2009. This is the highest honour that the Chinese Government bestows on foreign experts who have made outstanding contributions to China.

Professor Park currently holds the Judith and David Coffey Chair in Sustainable Agriculture. He is Director of the Australian Cereal Rust Control Program, which includes nodes at the University of Adelaide, CSIRO Plant Industry, and the International Wheat and Maize Improvement Centre in Mexico (CIMMYT). His research group at the University of Sydney currently comprises 8 scientific staff and 7 support staff, and he currently supervises 4 postgraduate students. Professor Park has published more than 100 scholarly research papers, and with two colleagues co-authored a book that has become a standard reference in the field of wheat rust genetics.

Research interests

Professor Park is particularly interested in the way in which fungal rust pathogens evolve and acquire virulence for resistance genes in their hosts. He has conducted Australia-wide race analyses for the rust pathogens that cause stem rust in wheat, leaf rust in wheat, leaf rust in barley, and crown rust in oats, since 1988. His research group has developed and applied DNA-based markers to understand how rust pathogen populations have evolved in Australia over the past 90 years, and are now applying whole genome sequencing to delve further.

Robert is also interested in the genetics of resistance to these pathogens in their respective hosts, and his group works very closely with most cereal breeders in Australia to provide support in rust resistance breeding. He has strong linkages with rust researchers throughout Australia via his position as Director of the Australian Cereal Rust Control Program, which is funded by the Grains Research and Development Corporation. He is also actively involved in international rust research, notably via participation in the global effort to tackle a new race of stem rust, known as Ug99, which emerged in eastern Africa in 1999 and has since spread to Yemen, Iran and South Africa.

Teaching and supervision

Although a research only staff member, Professor Park has delivered a short course on rust pathology and genetics to undergraduate students, and is regularly involved in international training courses in these areas. He has been principal supervisor to 8 PhD students and 5 Masters students, and associate supervisor to 9 PhD students. A major focus in recent years, supported by funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, has been postgraduate training of women from east Africa.
