Biographical details

Roz Deaker is a microbiologist specializing in the field of rhizobiology and nitrogen fixation. She completed a BSc at the University of Sydney followed by a Dip Ed at Macquarie University. Roz joined the faculty as a research assistant and then pursued further study leading to an MSc Agr and a PhD. Roz is an active member of the Pulsford Laboratory (formerly SUNFix) in the faculty. She is also the industry and research liaison for the Australian Inoculant Research Group (AIRG) responsible for quality control of legume inoculants and has strong links to the microbial inoculant industry. Development of a legume inoculant quality trademark and code of practice to indicate product integrity to the market was one of the major achievements of this collaboration.

Research interests

Roz is interested in the efficacy of microbial inoculants applied to crops as sustainable alternatives to chemical inputs. She is particularly interested in the effective delivery of nitrogen fixing bacteria called rhizobia to legumes as a means of increasing inputs of biological nitrogen fixation in farming systems. Her work covers aspects of the microbial inoculant supply chain from formulation, quality and shelf life to application and conditions that contribute to efficacy in the field. Microorganisms are often exposed to stressful conditions during the inoculation process and are susceptible to desiccation. Roz’s research seeks to gain a fundamental understanding of how inoculant formulation and inoculation techniques affect desiccation tolerance and survival of inoculant microorganisms and their subsequent plant-growth promoting activity in the rhizosphere.

Teaching and supervision

Roz teaches in the areas of microbiology, biochemistry and agronomy. She has completed two MScAgr and one PhD student and is currently principal supervisor of two PhD students and co-supervises four others.
