Dr. Ruijun completed his Bachelor of Science in 1984 and his Master of Science 1987 at the Harbin Normal University (China). Between 1987 to 2000 he worked at the same university with his research focused on the introduction and domestication of wildflowers, biosystematics of medicinal plants (Vicia and Bupleurum etc) and seasonal growth in root systems of herbaceous perennials. During this time he published more than 20 papers in peer reviewed journals (Chinese and English). In 1998 he received the Royal Society Fellowship (UK) and did a one-year research project at the University of Wales Aberystwyrth. Here he analyzed relationships between tetraploid Vicia and its diploid relatives using molecular cytogenetic techniques such as genomic in situ hybridization (GISH) and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). In 2000, he moved to Australia and completed a PhD from the University of Sydney in 2005 in genetics and breeding of ornamental plants. Since then he has been a plant breeder for ornamental plants in Plant Breeding Institute.
Dr. Ruijun is a plant breeder. His research interest is innovation and improvement in flowering ornamentals for the world market. He has experience in the commercial ornamental industry as a flower breeder and a specialist in interspecific hybridization. His research areas include interspecific and intergeneric hybridization, embryo rescue techniques, sexual polyploidization, molecular marker techniques, chromosome painting, biotic resistance and abiotic stress resistance breeding. Dr Ruijun carries out ornamental breeding project in cooperation with international companies. In current breeding project, the following crops are being bred and researched: Campanula, Euphorbia, Leucanthemum, Lavandula, Portulaca and Verbena among others.
