Biographical details

Sharon is a visiting research fellow hosted by the Department of Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Agriculture and Environment at The University of Sydney. She is funded under the European FP7 Marie Curie Fellowship programme for a period of three years, two years of which will be spent working under the mentorship of Professor Alex McBratney (May 2013 to 2015). In the third year of the project she will return to the School of Biosystems Engineering, University College Dublin, Ireland to investigate soil carbon distribution in soils from a range of agricultural management regimes.

Formally, Sharon held a teaching post in the UCD School of Agriculture and Food Science (2011 to 2012) where she co-ordinated the following modules;‘Nutrient Management’, ‘Climate, Carbon & Soils’ and ‘Soil & Water Management’. She completed a two year postdoc (2009 – 2011) in the UCD School of Biosystems Engineering (2009 – 2011) on optical sensing and chemometric analysis of soils. During her PhD (awarded 2009, The Queen’s University, Belfast, Northern Ireland) she examined a number of mitigation options to lower phosphorus loss to water following surface applications of manure in intensive dairy farms.

Research interests

Her research aims to understand the role of small-scale spatial organisation of soil organic carbon within soil with respect to the long-term security of the abiotic carbon store. In hercurrent projectshe isusing a combination of visible near-infrared hyperspectral imaging, chemometrics, X-ray fluorescence technology and pedometrics to build new scientific understanding of soil carbon security.

Other research interests include farm nutrient management and phosphorus dynamics.
