How to apply
Please note that applicants are required to make contact with an appropriate supervisor before submitting an application for research candidature.
As a general rule, a candidate for the Doctor of Philosophy will proceed by research and submission of a thesis.
The applicant will hold either a four-year Bachelor’s degree with First or Second Class Honours or equivalent of the University of Sydney, hold a degree of Bachelor of the Faculty with a credit grade or above in the fourth year in the field in which the candidate is proceeding or hold a three-year Bachelor's degree from an equivalent University and a one-year Master's coursework degree, with a research component amounting to at least twenty-five percent; or have completed courses in another faculty or institution which are deemed by the Faculty to be equivalent.
Demonstrated research ability will be considered when determining eligibility. Applicants should provide evidence of research experience such as publications in scientific journals.
Language proficiency (for international students)
English Language requirements: IELTS of 6.5 with no band less than 6.0 or TOEFL 550 plus a TWE of 5.0. English language test scores must be less than 2 years old at the date you apply to the University of Sydney.
All documents submitted to the University of Sydney must either be original documents or certified copies of original documents. An original document must carry on it the original stamps and signatures of the issuing authority.
Guidelines for certifying documents
When originals are not available and copies of originals are submitted, it is essential that the person certifying the copy has sighted the original. Documents can only be certified by the issuing institution, an Australian diplomatic post, a registered agent of the University of Sydney, or, in the People’s Republic of China, a notary public. Justices of the Peace (JPs) are not authorised to certify documents. A registered agent of the University must use the agency stamp and sign and print their name on each page when certifying a copy.
If you are formally offered candidature you will be advised of the date and time to come to the Faculty Office to be enrolled into your degree. International students will be advised of all further details by the International Office of the University.
