Key Work and Results
The PBI is nationally and internationally recognised for its Cereal Plant Breeding and Cereal Rust Studies. In addition the PBI is the research and development arm of NuFlora International, a company with ornamentals in USA and Europe.
Pre-Breeding
Prof. Richard Trethowan leads his team in enhancing varieties for different traits, eg. water efficiency to cope with drought conditions.
Triticale
The Institute is leading the nation in breeding both long season dual purpose triticales as well as spring types for marginal country.
Pulse Breeding
The PBI have a number of different pulse breeding programs running at Narrabri. Field peas under Steve Moore has been running for a number of years and faba beans is being added this year with support from I&I NSW.
New Opportunities
In recent times PBI Narrabri has added research grants in crown rot and abiotic stresses. A new facility is being built in Narrabri for the continuing breeding efforts conducted there.
