Breeding of Herbaceous Ornamentals

This is the oldest of the Institute’s horticultural breeding programmes and as listed in previous annual reports numerous varieties in some 20 genera have been released with notable success in the world market, the particular focus being the development of forms capable of being mass produced by vegetative methods rather than from seed. Strong industry links in this area with a limited number of major partners has allowed the underpinning of the breeding work by industry funded post-graduate and post-doctoral positions as well as research staff positions. The blend of academic and industry working closely on ornamental plant breeding is unique to the PBI.
