Grain Research Development Corporation and the PBI have had close links since its inception in 1990. The Cereal Rust Laboratory based at PBI is funded by GRDC and has undergone a number of name changes to reflect this involvement. Originally known as the National Wheat Rust Control Program, the group changed first to the National Cereal Rust Control Program as the program involved all rust affected cereals, and the most recent change to Australian Cereal Rust Control Program (ACRCP) to reflect the international engagement of the Rust group and its links to CIMMYT and CSIRO.
The GRDC is also involved in the plant breeding activities of the University of Sydney based at Narrabri and funded the wheat breeding program until privatisation in the late 1990s. GRDC supports the current pre breeding programs at Narrabri and have increased their support of other University breeding programs associated with northern Australia.
The GRDC and the University of Sydney are closely linked in their support of the Australian grain grower with both organisations concentrating on assisting the farmer in achieving the best benefit in the most efficient way.
