Dr Urmil Bansal

Research interests

Gene discovery, molecular mapping and identification of markers closely linked with rust resistance genes in winter cereals.

Background

Dr Bansal received her Ph.D. in Genetics from Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, India. She worked in the areas of genetics of host-pathogen interaction in maize, and rice at PAU, Ludhiana. She has more than 10 years experience in genetics and mapping of rust resistance genes in wheat. She has a unique combination of experience in genetics (gene mining, genetic mapping and association mapping) and plant pathology. To pursue these research interests her program is focused on gene discovery through association mapping and mapping of new rust resistance genes in wheat, barley, oats and triticale using high throughput mapping technologies. Dr Bansal has been involved in the identification; characterisation and naming of new rust resistance loci.
Dr Bansal can offer research projects in the following areas:

  • Identification of genomic locations of rust resistance genes through genetic mapping using high through-put marker technologies
  • Identification of closely linked markers for adult plant rust resistance genes in wheat
  • Fine mapping of adult plant resistance to stem rust and leaf rust
