STAR ASTRONOMER

Bryan Gaensler BSc '94, BSc Hons '95, PhD '99

Bryan Gaensler is one of Australia's most brilliant young scientists, currently making his mark on the universal stage through his work as a Professor of Astronomy at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachussetts. He has been offered an ARC Federation Fellowship to return to the University of Sydney in 2006.

In January 2006, Bryan was awarded the 2006 Newton Lacy Pierce Prize in Astronomy by the American Astronomical Society. The award honours an astronomer under the age of 36 who demonstrates outstanding achievement in observational astronomical research.

"Being a student at the University of Sydney taught me how to think for myself."

A pulsar/supernova specialist, Bryan is closely involved with plans to build the world's biggest radio telescope, the SKA or Square Kilometre Array, in Western Australia, and his greatest hope is to see this project realised.

"This will let me make new and exciting discoveries about the structure and evolution of the Universe and allow me to pass my knowledge and enthusiasm onto new generations of astronomy students," says Bryan.

"Being a student at the University of Sydney taught me how to think for myself. I got many great chances to do real research, and the topics I was exposed to are areas I am still researching today."
