The University's Latin motto "Sidere Mens Eadem Mutato" translates to "The stars change but the mind is constant".
Many of the world's great academic institutions have Latin mottoes, including Oxford and Cambridge, on which Sydney was modelled.

Under the Southern Cross, University traditions are identical with those of the older universities of the northern hemisphere. The motto was devised by F L S Merewether, Second Vice-Provost of the University.”
