Friday 17 April
Networking Drinks
Our second consecutive monthly networking drinks were held at Pi at Central - Lan Kwai Fong on the 17th April. It was a great opportunity for alumni and their guests to catch up with other alumni. A number of alumni currently visiting Hong Kong from overseas also came along making the evening both a local and international networking opportunity.
Thursday 5 March Networking Drinks
It was an incredible evening at Central Lan Kwai Fong, as the HKAA hosted the first networking drinks event in 2009 on Thursday, the 5th of March. This time we not only saw many old uni friends who had always showed their full support in our previous events; there were also many new joiners getting to know more about HKAA and other guests, which made the evening an enjoyable and remarkable one. All in all, it was an exciting evening filled with lots of entertaining guests, fun conversations, rekindled friendships and new connections.
Friday 27 February Bushfire Memorial Service in Hong Kong
The Australian Consulate-General in Hong Kong is arranging a public Hong Kong Memorial Service for victims of the Victorian Bushfires at St John's Cathedral in Central tomorrow evening from 6:00 pm. All are welcome to attend. Attendees will be able to inscribe expressions of condolence in an official Victorian Government Messages Book.
The Hong Kong ceremony follows Australia's recent National Day of Mourning held on Sunday 22 February, in Melbourne and various locations around the country.
The Victorian bushfires are now recognised as the worst natural disaster in Australia's modern history. To date, over 200 people died and more than 1800 homes and farms destroyed, mainly in major outbreaks on Saturday 7 February, which also burned through more than 1500 square miles (3900 square kilometres) across the state. Various fires are still burning.

2008 Hong Kong Reception - Monday 20 October
The new Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Dr Michael Spence (BA '85 LLB '87), has "recruited" alumni as the "diplomatic corps" of the University during an October visit to Hong Kong.
Speaking at the Hong Kong Alumni Reception at the Conrad Hotel on Monday 20 October, he emphasized the importance of alumni to the University and asked them to be "our critical friends, to provide us with feedback on what we are doing wrong, and to be our best ambassadors in what we do that is right."
More than 200 University of Sydney Hong Kong alumni seized the opportunity to socialize and network with fellow alumni and meet the Chancellor, Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir AC CVO (MBBS '56 MD '02), the Vice-Chancellor and Principal, and their Faculty Deans at this reception.
The Vice-Chancellor and Principal also recognised the contribution of the Hong Kong Alumni Association in strengthening the Hong Kong Alumni Community, through a range of events and programs, and encouraged all those at the Reception to find out more about other alumni events in Hong Kong.
The reception was held the evening before the 2008 Hong Kong graduation ceremony, and was an ideal opportunity for those about to graduate to be welcomed into this thriving local alumni community.
The Sydney Conservatorium Orava String Quintet and Sydney Conservatorium of Music Brass Quartet provided wonderful musical entertainment which greatly added to the ambience of the evening.
2008 Olympics in China - Harbour Cruise, Saturday 9 August
It was a perfect day for harbour cruise with the nice and sunny weather, despite the heavy rain and storm we experienced earlier in the week. Our Alumni enjoyed the day on a wonderful cruise getting to know each other and expanding our networks. As a bonus, the lunch was better than everyone expected as we had crabs and scampi for main course.
A big thank you goes out to Wendy He (GradDipCom '05 BSc '04) for organising this Habour Cruise event, as well as other committee members of the Hong Kong Alumni Association. Hope to see you on our next BIG event - the Reunion Reception.
