Mauna Kea Observatory

Mauna Kea Observatory

Lynne Jackson , January 2013

We started the day swimming with turtles in tropical water and finished it at 4205m above sea level freezing our !!!! off below zero temperatures. We drove up to the Mauna Kea Observatory to experience the big, dark night sky. We were above the cloud line so the nights are always clear with very little background illumination. Around the observatory all outside lights are regulated so as to not pollute the background. After dark they were firing lasers from the observatory.
