Essaouira, Morocco

Essaouira, Morocco

Dr Carolyn Watson, December 2012

This photo was taken in Essaouira, Morocco where the ancient wall forms part of the city's defences, beyond which lies the Atlantic. The area was bustling with tourists and the medina below, but this local lady somehow managed to find her own little piece of tranquillity staring out into the ocean. As I watched her it struck me how relaxed, thoughtful and reflective she seemed. I then thought about the canon on which she was sitting - over the ages, it would have been used in numerous defences of the city during times of war and invasion. Though somehow the beauty of the setting belies its origins. Green, the colour of Islam, represents paradise. And if the lobster I ate that day is anything to go by, Essaouira may well fit the description!
