Souq Waqif, Qatar
Kerry Evans, December 2011
The Souq Waqif in Doha, Qatar dates back at least 100 years and was recently restored to its former glory. Its name translates to ‘the standing market’ and houses an abundance of colour, texture, aromas and a most unusual array of items to buy ranging from spices, perfumes, handicrafts, souvenirs and fabric, to gold and horses. This young Qatari boy was proudly showing off his newly purchased falcon, and allowed us to take his photo. The Falcon is considered a noble creature and an important part of Qatari heritage. Interestingly it is also allowed to travel in the cabin when flying with QATAR Airways, provided it is hooded and tied securely to its handler.
