Village life, Varanasi
Nicholas Thorup , February 2012
This photograph was made outside of Varanasi, India, one of the holiest and oldest cities in the world. While staying in Varanasi for two months, I went across to the Eastern bank of Ganges River only two times. The people there have not grown accustomed to tourism and development like their neighbours across the river. There was an intense peace and beauty there and also a strong sense of innocence - something that has been lost in the city. This photograph shows a woman working with her impressive collection of buffalo dung, which is used to produce biogas to generate electricity and heat.
