Fes in Morocco is one of the largest intact medieval cities remaining in the world. This photo is of Chouara Tannery in the heart of the Fes Medina, where leather goods have been produced for at least the last nine centuries. My wife and I were lucky enough to view the tannery from an nearby balcony that a local guide had arranged. Although the smell was overpowering in the midday sun, the workers were unfazed as they used traditional techniques to turn animal skins into leather for handbags, shoes and jackets.
