2010 Graduate Exhibition

Archipelago 26 Nov to 3 Dec

Students from the Faculty of Architecture, Design and Planning are holding its annual Graduation Exhibition, this year called Archipelago, from 26th of November to the 3rd of December.

The exhibition is held throughout the Wilkinson Building at the University of Sydney, including the Tin Sheds gallery, and attracts thousands of visitors, with the opening night being a highlight on the industry calendar.

Featuring projects from the Master of Architecture, Bachelor of Design in Architecture and Bachelor of Design Computing, the exhibition demonstrates not only the students’ mastery of their respective disciplines but the range of projects that have been undertaken in their final year of study.

Over 200 student works are included in the exhibition, which is developed and coordinated by the students themselves.

The exhibition catalogue is viewable online and is available in print;

Master of Architecture

Master of Architecture student works come from a range of different Graduation Studio projects exploring different themes:

  • 'Working Bays' re-invigorating industrial uses on harbour foreshore land
  • [[i||'New Geographies' exploring the architectural potentials and limits in re-occupying the 'new voids' of industrial obsolescence in South Sydney
  • 'Dutch Set Moves' investigating the dynamic relationship between architecture and urbanism and creating territorial strategies covering the Sydney Metropolitan area and beyond
  • 'Desire' researching and redesigning the suburb for 21st Century in such a way that it was both desirable and sustainable
  • 'Wired Lab' designing an artist in residence facility for WIRED Lab, a collaborative arts project in South West NSW
  • 'Urapuntja Cultural Village' designing a Cultural Village at Utopia Community in the Northern Territory
  • 'Middle Head Interventions' exploring the architectural possibilities offered by the gun emplacements at Sydney Harbour's Middle Head
  • Honours studio works with students chose from amongst the available Graduation Studio projects and developing their design project with a strong research orientation

The Bates Smart Flowing Light Pavilion, which featured in the recent Sydney Architecture Festival in front of Customs House, will also be exhibited.

Bachelor of Design in Architecture

Works from the Bachelor of Design in Architecture came from their final studio, and explored external and internal worlds.

The (inside) : theatre of anatomy project ran in conjunction with the International Organisation of Scenographers, Technicians and Theatre Architects (OISTAT) Theatre Architecture Competition (TAC) exploring architectural opportunities offered by St Anna's Church in Prague, now operating as the Prague Crossroads cultural centre.

The )outside( project was an opportunity for students to engage with architectures and urban spaces in an alternate way that challenged the habits by which we engage in the outside world. Projects used the La Perouse Golf Club, set amongst a dramatic cliff face, as a starting point for design.

Bachelor of Design Computing

Design Computing allows students the great flexibility to develop their own concepts and ideas, promoting self-directed learning. The projects exhibited by the students of this unique program reflect this flexibility, and include information design, interactive touch screen programs, games and applications for phones and smart screens, animations, digital video production, 3D modelling and rendering and screen design.

Once regarded as being only about website design, special effects, computer games and animation Design Computing has expanded, infused with industrial design, product design, fashion, new media and the arts. More than simply learning software tools, the degree establishes new ways of designing by integrating technology and creativity into the design process.
