Welcome to the Faculty of Architecture, Design and Planning at The University of Sydney
In choosing to study with us you join one of the region’s most respected bodies of students, researchers and teachers across the digital and built environment fields.
We have 1300 undergraduate, postgraduate and research students in our Faculty, and we work hard to make sure that every student receives an education that is both challenging and rewarding; an education that is always of the utmost quality. Our history of innovation has meant that we meet both the theoretical and practical needs of the industries. This sees our students go on to thrive in their future careers as leaders of their fields.
This year we welcome 500 new students from both Australia and abroad. We are proud of our track record in attracting talented students from right around the world.
Our two undergraduate programs have the highest requirements of any program of their kind in Australia. Both the Bachelor of Design in Architecture and the Bachelor of Design Computing require an Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank within the top 10% of the state for entry. Congratulations to those who have gained entry into those programs and will be joining us. We look forward to sharing your passion for and commitment to design excellence.
At a postgraduate level we have the widest range of programs of any similar faculty in the country. The Design Science program, the only one offered in Australia, sees our students specialising in Audio and Acoustics, Building, Building Services, Illumination Design and Sustainable Design, or a combination of these fields. Our Urban and Regional Planning program, a descendent of the first such program offered in Australia, allows students to draw on the resources of the Planning Research Centre as well as related programs in Heritage Conservation and Urban Design. Our Interaction Design and Electronic Arts program is one of only a handful of such programs offered around the world that focus on the nexus between design, human computer interaction and technology.
All of these programs help round out the educational breadth offered in our Master of Architecture. Not only is it the program of choice for our Bachelor of Design in Architecture students, but we are also increasingly finding those from other universities in Australia and right around the world joining us to take the course.
In addition, our Faculty offers the opportunity to go on to pursue research degrees, both Master of Philosophy and PhD, across four interrelated disciplines- architecture and allied arts, architectural science, design computing and cognition, and urban and regional policy and planning. Research undertaken by both students and staff is one area of the faculty in which resources are being channeled to support development.
With an extensive range of laboratories and workshops, our unrivaled resources help cement our ties with the industry with a symbiotic relationship of support for research and development.
However, I am most proud of my colleagues in the Faculty. Many are world-renowned researchers and educators in their fields, but we enjoy an informal culture that creates a collegiate atmosphere. They are enthusiastic and approachable, always ready to assist and mentor students.
I look forward to welcoming you to our academic family, and know you will feel at home with us.
With best wishes,
Professor John Redmond
Dean, Faculty of Architecture, Design and Planning
