Biographical details

Francesco (M. Building Engineering PoliBA [2001] and PhD Building Engineering PoliBA [2006]) spent the first 10 years of his academic career at the Polytechnic University of Bari (Italy), where he worked as Research Assistant in Building Construction (2002-2007) and subsequently as a lecturer and coordinator of the unit of study “Building Components Design” (M. Architectural Engineering).

His current research activities are oriented to:

  • The development of technologies and systems for smart kinetic facades;
  • Integrated thermal and visual comfort analyses of advanced façade systems;
  • The implementation of smart materials (photovoltachromics, phase-change materials, electro-active polymers) to building envelope
  • Integration within the building envelope of active systems for the conversion of energy from renewable sources.

Recently he has started the creation of an International Network for High Performance Smart Kinetic Facades, joining expertise from industry with research institutions. He has secured funds from the Usyd’s International Program Development Funds (IPDF) for partnering with Politecnico di Milano and the University of Cambridge and, more recently, he has been asked to join as delegate for Australia, the new COST Action TU1403: Adaptive Facade Network. The network currently includes 70 participants from 28 countries, with several industrial partners.
