Biographical details

Jianlei joined the School with a conjoint appointment with School of Civil Engineering in 2017. Prior to this time he was a Chair Professor of Building Environment and Energy at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, concurrently serving as Chair of Departmental Research Committee, Director of Research Centre for Building Environmental Engineering. Earlier in his professional career he was a lecturer at Tsinghua University, and also worked in UK as an exchange R&D engineer in the utility manufacturing industry. Jianlei received both his BSc and MSc from Tsinghua University, Beijing and PhD from Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands. He is awarded with fellowship from five leading professional and academic societies, including ASHRAE, CIBSE, HKIE, ISIAQ and IBPSA.

With a specialized expertise in Computation Fluid Dynamics(CFD)/Numerical Heat and Mass Transfer(NHT), Jianlei’s research activities span a wide spectrum of areas related to real life issues in built environment and energy efficiency. These include indoor air quality, control of infectious diseases spread, advanced built environment control technologies for thermal comfort and modern datacenters. Jianlei has successfully supervised over twenty PhD students and post-doctoral fellows. His more recent activities have been more focused on developing cross-boundary research programs, ranging from developing thermal energy storage materials to developing simulation methodologies for factoring outdoor wind and thermal comfort in urban planning.

Jianlei served as an associate editor of the journal Building and Environment in 2013 and 2014, and is an editor-in-chief of the Elsevier journal Energy and Buildings. He also sits in the editorial board of the International Journal of Building Performance Simulation, Building Simulation, andInternational Journal of Sustainable Built Environment. He is serving as Engineering Panel Member of the Research Grant Council, and project review expert of Health and Medical Research Fund, Hong Kong SAR. He is a board member of the Society of Energy Storage, and Society of Building Performance Simulation, China.

Research interests

Hot and cold weather affect our everyday life, but relying too much on air-conditioning and heating is costly and can have health drawbacks. An air-conditioning engineer by training, Professor Jianlei Niu’s research now focuses on finding ways to keep us thermally comfortable both indoors and out, with minimal use of energy and maximal health benefits.


“Modern populations spend most of their time indoors, and poor indoor air quality – which can be caused by a variety of factors – can cause serious health problems, including largescale spread of infectious diseases such as influenza.
“My research aims to improve indoor air quality through building material selection and design, and by engineering the airflow within and around buildings to minimise infectious disease spread.


“Traditionally, when someone was infected with a highly contagious disease, the practice was to quarantine them in their own home. But research that I conducted after the 2003 SARS outbreak found that an infected person in a multistorey apartment building might infect their neighbours, both upstairs and on the same floor, with significant implications. So in such an environment the traditional quarantine practice would place the other residents at significant risk, and alternative measures should be recommended.


“As well as indoor air quality, I am also working on improving the outdoor thermal comfort in our community through planning and building form design, so that city residents can enjoy more outdoor activities. “The two major trends of urbanisation and climate change are related, and my research aims to address both by enhancing the liveability of big cities and helping to curb climate change.
“Having worked in this field for more than 30 years, I have found that the University of Sydney offers me tremendous new, multidisciplinary research opportunities. Colleagues from a wide range of disciplines are willing to work together to tackle real-life issues in a synergistic way.”
