How much does memory weigh? It is estimated that the internet weighs the same as a strawberry. The millions of human experiences, digitised and shared through photos, videos and blog posts, would weigh the same as a single strawberry. The chaos of human life, globally, is poured everyday into digital frames – into Facebook, into Google, into the nodes and networks that shape our understanding of ourselves and each other. This chaos is given physical form. Memory, given weight. Organised Cacophony. This collection of graduating works from the Bachelor of Design Computing and the Master of Interaction Design and Electronic Arts showcases student achievement in interrogating the nature of our relationship with digital technologies. The interactive experiences produced by these works challenges visitors to engage with their own use of digital media and to question what our future will be like. Exploring themes of distance, nostalgia, triumphs and failures, the projects show how design and technology can help us understand ourselves as a society and to provide unique insights into the fusion of digital and the real that characterises modernity. The Design Lab proudly invites you join us in this conversation. It is hoped that together we can raise our own organised cacophony. The Rocks Popup is an initiative of the Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority to find creative uses for temporarily vacant buildings, attracting new visitors to Sydney’s historic heart.
