This paper presents baseline research into the journey to work travel patterns in the Sydney Commuter Belt. The paper is based largely on analysis of the enhanced 2006 Census data, sourced from the Transport Data Centre and from the Australian Bureau of Statistics data sets. The ABS/TDC data present clear evidence of the relationship between location near good transit service (particularly the railway system) and choice of mode for the Journey to Work. They establish a distinct pattern of high transit use to the Harbour Cities of Sydney and North Sydney that follows the rail lines; but which is not replicated in the River Cities of Parramatta, Liverpool and Penrith.
