CPD and Short Courses

The Faculty of Architecture, Design & Planning offers a wide range of single unit and short course options for CPD (Continuing Professional Development) or to update knowledge, enhance career pathways or explore a personal interest. These subjects are open to professionals with or without prior higher education in these fields.

If you are considering further study it is also an opportunity to try a subject from a program to gauge its suitability. Some subjects are taught in intensive block-mode, condensing a whole semester into four to six days, making them easier to fit around work, family and other commitments, others are taught weekly, often in the evening. These single subjects are available only to Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents and citizens of New Zealand. Participants are expected to complete the assessment work and if successfully completed, will be eligible to receive credit towards a future degree. The granting of credit is subject to faculty resolutions as specified in the Faculty of Architecture, Design & Planning handbook.

CPD points for AIA, SBSE/EA, PIA and AIRAH members are available for most subjects. We also have an online option for architects wishing to complete their formal hours – Designing with Surfaces, Form and Light online modules.

Heritage Conservation

The following units are drawn from the graduate Heritage Conservation program. Heritage Conservation units appeal to a wide range of professional and personal interests, including planners, architects, interior designers and builders, although most units can be undertaken without any prior educational background in these fields.

Architecture

Units from the Master of Architecture program include units in modelling, history and theory and architectural technologies. Studios may be taken individually if required for meeting local registration of international qualifications as directed by the Architects Accreditation Council of Australia.

In addition to units from the graduate program in Architecture, Architectural practitioners may benefit from undertaking units from Architectural Science in fields such as Audio and Acoustics, Building Services, Illumination Design and Sustainable Design, as well as Heritage Conservation, Urban Design and Urban and Regional Planning.

Urban Design

Urban Design units may be undertaken by planners, architects, landscape architects and other related professionals with prior experience in design or urban planning theory, practice and issues.

Audio and Acoustics

The Audio & Acoustics program is unique within Australia and provides audio engineers, architects and enthusiasts the opportunity to explore a diverse range of topics that range from architectural acoustics to loudspeaker design.

Building Services

In addition to architects, builders and engineers, Building Services units may be undertaken by those seeking vocational training to transfer into this field. CPD points for AIA, SBSE/EA, PIA and AIRAH members are available for most subjects.

Illumination Design

Illumination design provides professional education options for architects, interior designers, engineers, lighting and set designers and related professionals.

Sustainable Design

Units from the Sustainable Design program provide design and building professionals and allied practitioners with the opportunity to gain knowledge across ethical, economical and practical issues associated with the design, building, renovating and maintenance of residential, commercial and industrial structures.

Facilities Management

Facilities Management units can be undertaken by those already in the management of business premises or those seeking to enter this growing field.

Interaction Design and Electronic Arts

Supporting units from the Interaction Design and Electronic Arts program provide professionals, entrepreneurs and practioners an awareness of design as a wholistic cognitive activity.

Urban and Regional Planning

Units from the Urban and Regional Planning program can be used as CPD for PIA members or as an entree point into a career as a planner. Architects also benefit from gaining additional knowledge of planning laws and procedures.
