Mark Jones

I have been teaching ceramics at the University of Sydney for the past fifteen years. I also taught ceramics and sculpture for Edith Cowan University, Kalgoorlie College and Newcastle University. As co-ordinator of ceramics at the Tin Sheds Gallery and Art Workshops within the Faculty of Architecture, Design and Planning I am involved in the administration of units of study and part time tutors.
My areas of interest in research include wheel thrown ceramic forms and devising new surface treatments and glazes. I have also exhibited ceramic and mixed media sculptural installations that incorporate light and sound. The concept of light producing sound has intrigued me for the last few years. I have been developing a device (originally based on the Optimin which was based on the Theramin) that produces sound from variances in light. At the moment I am also writing an article on ceramics in Thailand where recent archaeological finds point to Thailand as being the birth place of ceramics.
