Biography
Anna Rubbo has degrees in architecture from the University of Melbourne and the University of Michigan, where she also taught. She has worked in practice in Australia (Ancher, Mortlock & Murray, G & R Block, Peter Muller) and the UK (Arup Associates), and in her doctorate investigated cultural and design questions in relation to housing and settlement patterns in a rural area of Colombia, South America. She has been a Visiting Scholar at Columbia University and at the University of Michigan, and recipient of a Center for the Education of Women fellowship to research architectural education and globalisation.
She has served as head of the Department of Architecture Planning and Allied Arts, as BSc (Architecture) and B.Arch program coordinator, and as a member of the NSW Board of Architects. She was a member of the National Capital Authority Griffin Legacy Advisory Panel (2003-04) and the UN Millennium Project Taskforce to Improve the Lives of Slum Dwellers (2002-04). Since 2005 Anna has convened the teaching –research project, Global Studio (Istanbul 2005, Vancouver 2006, Johannesburg 2007-09) and associated international conferences, People Building Better Cities (2005, 2007). She participated in the Rockefeller Foundation Urban Innovation Summit in Italy in 2007 to explore how urban professionals might be educated to meet the challenges of urban poverty. She is currently working on Global Studio Bhopal (2012) www.theglobalstudio.com.
In 1995 Anna initiated and coordinated (1995-2011) the Faculty’s Thursday Night Lecture public lectures program, and with Dr. Adrian Snodgrass was a founding and continuing editor of the journal Architectural Theory Review (1996-2011). She is recipient of the 2006 NSW RAIA Marion Mahony Griffin Award, a 2009 Vice Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching (high commendation), and the Washington University 2009 Skandalaris award for leadership and entrepreneurship in architecture, design and the visual arts through community-based and sustainable practices. Anna was made a Life Fellow of the AIA in 2010, received the 2010 Alumni Award for International Achievement and in 2011 was awarded the AIA Neville Quarry Education Prize.
