Dr Duanfang Lu teaches in the Sydney School of Architecture, Design and Planning at the University of Sydney. She holds a BArch from Tsinghua University, Beijing and PhD in Architecture from the University of California, Berkeley. She has been awarded prestigious research grants from the US Social Science Research Council, UC Berkeley, the Getty Foundation and Australian Research Council (Discovery Project, 2007–9), and the Best Article Prize from Planning Perspectives and the International Planning History Society (2006–7).
Her book Remaking Chinese Urban Form (2006, 2011) provides a significant new perspective on the intertwined relationship between modernity, scarcity and the built environment by examining the development of the work unit (danwei) as a primary urban form under Maoist socialism. The book has been reviewed by 12 journals and is a set text for urban planning courses at universities around the world. Dr Lu has been a leading scholar in the study of the built environment in non-Western societies. Her book Third World Modernism (2010) opens up whole new perspectives on modern architecture in developing countries. Since 2009 Lu has been leading a research cluster on “Making Migrant Spaces” at the University of Sydney (Click here to read the Sydney Morning Herald report).

Dr Lu has been the first Australia-based scholar elected to be Board Director of the Society of Architectural Historians, and has given conference keynote speeches and invited lectures at various universities and institutes in Europe, Asia, USA and Australia. She serves on editorial boards of Traditional Dwellings and Settlements Review and Architectural Theory Review, and on the advisory board of the International Association for the Study of Traditional Environments. In 2011 she won the Australian Research Council Future Fellowship ($682,836), which will support her world-leading research in Chinese urban planning policy.

Lu is Principal of GZ Architects (co-founded with Gang Gang) and has extensive experience in architectural design and neighbourhood planning. She won the First Prize in Bao’an Central Area “Green Axis” Complex Design Competition, Shenzhen, in 2000 (with Gang Gang). Her work was exhibited at the 2002 Bay Area Architectural Computer Graphic Exhibition in San Francisco. Most recent design projects include Zijinchanghe Residential Complex (270,000 square metres, Beijing) and Xindao Holiday Residential Complex (100,000 square metres, Beijing). She has been an invited columnist of the Italian design magazine Domus (China) since 2010.
