Biography
Sustainable architectural design emerged in the latter half of the 20th century as a major determinant in shaping the nature of building design, research and practice. Professor Hyde’s research is based on the notion that the social and cultural change to a more sustainable future is a journey, which involves transformation of current economic, social and environmental theory and practice.
A central construct to this approach is to explore the bioclimatic context to design, extending on Olgay’s foundation work though the idea of climate responsive design; through using the poetic and pragmatic issues of site and climate as a determinant, the conceptual and technical development of project is enhanced (Hyde 2001). Extensions to this approach came though the IEA Task 28 on Sustainable Solar Housing leading to a recent book (Hyde 2008) and IEA Task 47 and forthcoming book on Sustainable Retrofitting (Hyde 2012). This work has involved developing and integrating new green technologies in conjunction with the Forest and Wood Products Association, The Institute of Wood Science, USA and over thirty industry partners. This cross-disciplinary work resulted in a demonstration project creating an innovative lightweight sustainable prototype building (Healthy Home Project Australia); it is cited for ‘best practice’ in the Commonwealth of Australia sustainable design guidance.
The need to aid transformation supported the development of new sustainable design standards and design tools. To this he has coordinated numerous projects through the Sustainable Tourism Collaborative Research Centre leading to innovative international Earthcheck Standards for the design and operational phases of sustainable development. http://www.earthcheck.org/. The theoretical work is found in recent books (Hyde 2007) http://www.crctourism.com.au. Notable tools involved computer-based design systems such as an energy-conservation tool for architects called LTV developed in conjunction with The Martin Centre, the University of Cambridge, UK.
His current activities involve working on technical, social and cultural aspects of sustainable design and are focussed around Australian Research Council (ARC) and Forest and Wood Products Association (FWPA) funding. The project Towards a Quality of Life Framework for Sustainable Housing in South East Queensland, (Hyde, R.A., Gardner, T., Skoein, P., Rutherford, L., Walton, C., Wadley, D.A., ARC Linkage 2006-2011), explores the role of social aspects of sustainability; Quality of Life is used as a measure of progress to sustainable development. Innovation of this project has come from the inclusion of environmental factors in the QoL model (Upadhyay 2012), and the influence of QoLe on environmental performance of housing (O'Callaghan 2012). More technical projects for example Towards Novel Biomimetic Building Materials: Evaluating Aboriginal and Western Scientific Knowledge of Spinifex Grasses, P Memmott (UQ) S. Schmidt (UQ), Hyde, R., (University of Sydney), D. Martin (UQ), R. Fensham (Qld Herbarium) ARC Discovery, in conjunction with the University of Queensland, focuses on the use of biomimetics to explore the development of new building materials. http://www.aboriginalenvironments.com/index. (Memmott, Hyde, Davidson 2010). Drawing from work of Benyus, J. M. (1997), Biomimetics in this context is seen as using nature as a mentor, model and measures for research and practice. (Gamage, Hyde, 2011 and 2012)
A new project in 2011 examines the function of thermal mass on energy performance and energy storage (Effective use of Thermal Mass in Residential Timber-framed Construction-Scoping study for developing rules of thumb for direct gain systems, Hyde, R., (University of Sydney), Hayman, S. (University of Sydney), Armstrong, P. ((University of Sydney), Forest and Wood Products Association.). The research used parametric modeling of stock houses through simulation and test cell monitoring; it has identified the amount, location and performance benefits of adding thermal mass to timber houses. The influence of different climates and other factors have assisted in quantifying the benefits of thermal storage (Slee, Hyde 2011).
A new project investigates the importance of cultural sustainability as a pillar of wisdom in transformation and change with in society; called The Green Renaissance Project (Hyde, R.A, Laser, E, Hayman, S., and Fiorito, F., Francesco Sartogo, President PRAU Solar Italy, and Professor Valario Calderaro, University of Rome, funded from the Sustainability Cluster, Institute of Sustainable Solutions, University of Sydney), it is involved in redefinition of our current understanding in this area (Laser, Hayman, Hyde 2011). Cross-disciplinary research started in 2009 linking research methodologies from archaeological, architectural science and historic conservation. The outcomes from this will provide better understanding of the bioclimatic aspects of Pre and Post Renaissance critical case buildings in Italy that has previously been largely ignored, improve the authenticity of the reconstructions of the critical cases and lay the framework for further conservation with in the cultural sustainability umbrella in Australia.
