Major-General Ivan Noel Dougherty CBE DSO ED

Major-General Ivan Dougherty served as a Fellow of the Senate from 1954 until 1974. During this time, he held the position of Deputy Chancellor from 1958-1966.

Major-General Ivan Dougherty was born in rural New South Wales. He moved to Sydney to attend the Sydney Teachers College. In 1928, Dougherty began teaching at Marrickville Junior Technical School, while also completing a Bachelor of Economics and the University of Sydney.

In 1926, Dougherty joined the Sydney University Regiment, and progressed through the ranks to achieve the title of Lieutenant Colonel in 1939. He initially served as a battalion commander in the Second World War, before being promoted to brigade commander. In recognition of his military service in the South West Pacific, Dougherty was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1947.

Major-General Ivan Dougherty served as a Fellow of the Senate from 1954 to 1974, holding the title of Deputy Chancellor from 1958 to 1966.

He died on the 4th of March 1998 following a long illness.
